Personally I think chamber music is best enjoyed in a "chamber" setting, i.e. a room not a big hall. But for reasons of logistics, it doesn't happen that way -- and the intimacy and coziness is gone. I would be interested in articles that discuss the importance of chamber-like settings for chamber music. There's an established tradition of house concerts in Europe but the term "house concerts" is more popular with independent folk & pop singer song writers in USA & Canada. I call ourselves a chamber duo - http://concertblog.wordpress.com but we're certainly not confined to playing just chamber music or stuck in a room somewhere...
Chamber music isn't dying but some of the old-line ensembles who try to please only their older, wealthy subscribers may be. I recently attended a concert by the Chameleon Arts Ensemble in Boston which renewed my hope for the future of chamber music. I wrote a review in my blog here: http://blog.pnart.com/?p=168
