PHP_Archive 0.7.0 is released

As I blogged about earlier, PHP_Archive has been completely refactored both to reduce the size of the archive and to improve its efficiency tremendously. For example, compare the running time of http://pear.php.net/go-pear.phar to http://pear.php.net/go-pear.php. I think you'll agree that go-pear.phar wins, hands down. Part of this is that it does not need to download anything .

This new release also opens up the possibility of making a .phar extension, something that would outperform PHP_Archive even more. Making it super-efficient will even allow running PHP apps right out of a .phar.

Greg, sorry to post this here, but where can i find information on automating a pear release with your Chiara pear server? I would like to make it so the release can be auto-uploaded into the pear server either externaly or from the server itself.

We php-gtk people had that vision some years ago - called it .par (like jar for java). There were two implementations which based on extracting the whole archive first...
It was early php4, but now there is the Stream API which offers a world of new possiblilities... The vision is becoming reality.
